The story behind the Team Shelby No license, no Race Tour, July31st through Aug 2nd
In September of 1952, several of the Dallas sport car fraternity headed to Road America (old street course) among them, Carroll Shelby. Carroll was there to race Ralph Richter’s Jaguar XK 120 in the Main Race. Up until then all the races Carroll drove were small affairs where no SCCA competition license was required. When Carroll came to sign on, officials were quick to point out: “no license, no race” --------Unless…. There was a practice race on Sunday and Carrol was told if he could find a car to drive in that race, and observing officials were satisfied with his driving, then they would issue a license. Carroll approached “Cully” Cullwell to convince him to let him drive his MG TC. Although “Cully was a bit concerned (He had to drive the MG back to Texas) he relented and, as they say, the rest is History. Our main event! 3 full days of racing and cruising. On a side note, In his first Race on the new track in 1956, Carroll finished in 1st (not by a small amount)
